ULEZ & Airport Parking: Avoid the £12.50 Daily Trap at Heathrow and Stansted in 2026

If you are planning to drive to a London airport in 2026, you need to be careful. The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) has expanded to cover almost all of Greater London, which now includes Heathrow Airport.

However, there is some good news. Stansted Airport is currently outside the zone. This means the rules for the two airports are completely different (for now), understanding this can save you money.

If your vehicle doesn't meet the emission standards (generally pre-2015 diesels or pre-2006 petrol cars), you must pay a £12.50 daily charge to drive within the ULEZ zone, a charge that applies 24/7 and 365 days a year, excluding Christmas Day.

Heathrow's drivers who don't run compliant cars will be charged when they enter the zone, however, drivers to Stansted won't be hit with this fee.

Lots of people think they have to pay the fee if they park their cars at the airport overnight, but a lot of people also think that the ULEZ charge is a parking charge. It isn't, though, it’s a driving charge and all that's required is for you to move the vehicle within the zone to be charged.

One of the best methods to avoid the ULEZ charge at Heathrow is to use an off-airport park and ride that is located just outside the zone. And since Stansted is outside the zone you are completely safe there.

Since choosing a parking lot that is “non-ULEZ” at Heathrow means you can drive up to the car park, drop off your car and take the shuttle bus to the terminal, all without incurring the £12.50 charge, checking the TFL Vehicle Checker is your best bet for staying on top of your number plate's status.

Smooth travels!
